Worktop Restoration

Worktop restoration and polishing process

Marble and terrazzo worktops can lose their even finish through everyday use. Restoration starts by assessing the stone, the existing finish and the marks that need attention. The method depends on the material and condition of the surface, so a worktop is assessed before choosing the abrasives and the finish.

How polishing works

Fine diamond abrasive discs or polishing pads are used in a sequence of grades to refine the stone surface. Each grade prepares it for the next, helping to reduce scratches and restore a more even appearance. Super-fine abrasive powders may be used during the finishing stage where appropriate. The aim is to remove as little material as necessary while improving the visible surface.

Worktop restoration differs from routine cleaning: polishing addresses the stone finish itself. A trained stone restorer should choose the method and test it against the particular material; using the wrong abrasive or product can damage marble or other natural stone. The photographs show Stone Rescue working on a worktop and a separate marble surface before finishing.

If you would like advice on a marked, dull or scratched worktop, send photographs that show the whole surface and close-ups of the affected areas. Please also tell us whether it is marble, terrazzo or another material if known. We can then discuss the restoration options for that particular surface.
