Sandstone cleaning and light honing

Terrazzo Floor Restoration

Description:

This Cliveden House Hotel spa project involved cleaning and light honing of sandstone. The project photographs show the stone steps and adjoining tiled areas at different stages of the work, with close views of the surface and the finished appearance.

Sandstone can hold visible dirt in its textured surface and along joints. Cleaning addressed surface buildup, while light honing helped even out the visible finish without the deeper removal involved in a full grind. The aim was to refresh the stone while retaining its natural character. The resulting appearance is a clean, understated matte to satin finish, as shown in the gallery.

Light honing is a surface treatment. Deep scratches, marks that have penetrated the stone and some established staining can remain after the work. The extent of improvement depends on the condition of each area, so the photographs are a useful guide to this particular project rather than a promise that every sandstone surface will respond identically.

See the before and after photographs below for the steps and surrounding sandstone, and explore the wider project gallery for other stone restoration examples.
