Location: Wimpole Street, London

Project overview: This ensuite bathroom on Wimpole Street, London has a black and white marble floor. The project addressed visible etch marks and a dull finish. The gallery shows the floor and the contrast between the two colours of marble, which makes an uneven sheen particularly noticeable.

Etch mark removal and polishing

Acidic substances can react with marble and leave pale, dull patches in its polished surface. Cleaning alone will not remove etching in the stone. For this floor, the work included refinishing the affected surface and polishing it to restore a more even appearance. The level of honing or polishing needed depends on the depth of the marks and the condition of the surrounding tiles.

After the polishing stage, an impregnating sealer was applied to help reduce the risk of staining. A sealer does not prevent acid etching, so spills should still be cleaned promptly with products suitable for marble. The photographs document the bathroom floor and the finished appearance of the black and white stone.

For a similar bathroom, send images of the full floor and close-ups of etch marks or worn areas so the restoration method can be assessed.
