Surface: Terrazzo Floor

Restoration and Protection
Location: Victoria Library, London
Description:
To restore the terrazzo floor to its optimal condition, we propose a mechanical resurfacing approach. This will involve the following steps:
- Cleaning and Grinding:
The floor will be mechanically ground down using a professional floor grinding machine equipped with artificial diamond abrasives. This process will remove approximately 1-2 mm of the surface, effectively eliminating topical damages such as indentations, scratches, and etch marks. The grinding will also address surface stains, restoring the terrazzo to a uniform base state. - Polishing:
Following the grinding phase, we will re-polish the surface to achieve a matte to silky finish. This step enhances the natural beauty of the terrazzo, ensuring a high-quality aesthetic outcome suitable for a conserved public space. - Crack and Chip Repairs
Our cost estimate includes the repair of up to five significant cracks or chips in the terrazzo floor. The repair process will involve:
• Materials and Technique:
We will use a combination of deep-penetrating resin to stabilise the floor structure and a topical application of coloured polyester glue mixed with stone chips matched to the terrazzo’s appearance. This ensures both structural integrity and visual continuity.
• Limitations:
Please note that this scope does not cover hairline cracks.
These will require an on-site assessment to determine whatever
are feasible for repair or not. Should additional structural repairs be required, we can provide a supplementary quote following the evaluation. - Protective Sealing Recommendation
To ensure the restored terrazzo floor meets safety standards and retains its condition over time, we recommend the application of a protective sealer. Our proposed solution is designed to achieve a pendulum slip test rating of 36 PTV in both dry and wet conditions, complying with safety requirements for public spaces.
